Restorative return

I tried out a new yoga studio this evening, and it was very nice indeed. The class was restorative yoga, and there's something to be said for a 90 minute session just before bed.

Vegetables and milk arrived this week, I had a great session this afternoon, and there was a lot of good camaraderie over knitting when I went to the yarn store.

What a good day.

Love & peace, y'all.

The answer to everything is more yoga.

The Gym Heals Everything

I have been away from the gym for too long, and even when I have been there in the last year or so, I had strayed pretty far from my original routine, a series that was crafted to help my personal resilience as much as a physical program of fitness.

After the terror of Saturday night's dreams and the echos that lingered, I couldn't think of a better plan to shake myself back toward center. I gave myself permission to go slowly, to do as much as I wanted and nothing more. This was about the process, not the tick marks on a page.

A half mile in to the walk and I was stopping to grab a pen -- notes for the writing piece started coming forth. By the time I was at a mile, my center was back in place, at least temporarily, and I headed to the stationary bike, my first friend along this path. Ten minutes of biking had my sweat going on and my heart rate where it needed to be; I might have only burned 56 calories during that 2.5 mile stationary excursion, but it was familiar enough to have me back in the groove, so I headed to the rowing machine where I spent just under six minutes getting that first meter in. Not the worst time by a long shot, and it was rhythmic and welcoming. In the weights room there is a new machine near the stand that I use for the twisted angels. I was suspicious of it; it looked far too comfortable. It had padding and a half-moon-shaped thing to lean over, with a spot to brace my feet straight out behind me. I did 16 face down, then 16 face up before deciding it was just too strange and moving back to the familiar stand and finishing the core work routine.

For arms I was surprised to see that a lot of the dumbbells were missing. This is sad. I grabbed the 5 pound set and did what has become a standard set for me -- this morning it was all about the number 8, except that I did two sets of swimmers' presses before I was aware of what was going on.

I had thought it would be nice to swim a bit, but there was a water aerobics class going on and the hot tub was just too inviting, so I soaked in that and it was an amazing way to relax before a trip to the sauna.

The shower afterward helped ground me perfectly for the rest of the day.
No wonder I followed this routine for so long.

At home after the shower, I made a protein bomb meal, snacking on watermelon while the bacon did its thing in the pan and the eggs fried in the resulting grease. Some cheese, tomato and basil made it especially wonderful.

Since then there have been errands and reading, writing, a book idea and some graph paper moments. There is yoga tonight, as long as I don't fall asleep before the class starts -- a real concern as the rain falls on a lazy late afternoon.

Nerd yoga

You might be a nerd if your Exalted Warrior pose reminds you og the 80s He-Man cartoon and you have the urge to shout "I have the POWER!"

My hair had jazz hands today as I headed out to yoga.
There is no better way to start the weekend than with Free Yoga For the People.
Bonny Branch is amazing, bar none.

I'm loving having sunshine with the morning yoga.
Spring puts the sun in my sun salute.

A Druidic-Rangering Sort of Day

Yesterday was a day without any focus whatsoever, and I barely remembered my own name, let alone was productive. Today was better, but it wasn't really what I would call focused, and, after sitting with that feeling for a bit, I decided to lean into it instead of trying to work against it.

What happened was a complete surprise, I promise you. With each step, I decided i would just do a little of whatever, usually something that seemed okay-ish, though not really interesting or compelling. I decided to read a bit and picked up the book-in-progress. An hour later, I had finished it, made significant paper-worthy notes in the margin along the way, and decided to pick up the next one in the stack. I'm now twenty percent of the way through that one, and there are notes in it as well.

After that, I checked my mail and made a few necessary phone calls, not really wanting to do much of anything involved. I noticed that there is a contest that seems like something a friend of mine would like, so I sent it along. Fiction isn't really my thing, let alone speculative fiction, but there was a sentence that came my way, so I wrote it down. Three pages later, it's a pretty good sketch, though not speculative fiction at all. I have no idea what to do with it, or what it will become, but it's real and on the page.

After that, I welcomed Harvey home and he brought in the cubby unit for Vivian's room (we are slowly getting the organization of the apartment done). We decided to see what the assembly requirements were, and the next thing you know we were done with it and had it in place.

Then we were heading to the gym, just to do a little something, maybe walk, and I remembered that we needed to drop by the comic book shop. We browsed and had a lovely time talking with Erin, who has a fondness for similar works as those we are getting for Vivian. She mentioned many helpful things, and, in true Nerd fashion, had a list for us before we left.

We went on our way to the gym, where we talked with Maggie, our favorite staff member. She was also full of good conversation and helpfulness, as always, and it's a delight to see her. We decided just to walk a bit, and after a half mile I asked if he would video the twisted angels, so we went off to do that. Then, since I was there, it made sense to do some situps. He went off to row for ten minutes, and I messed about with the weights and the yoga center, then hopped on the treadmill next to a classmate and jogged a quarter mile while I talked about reunion (I'm not going; she is). Harvey still had five minutes to go on the rower, so I sat on the one next to him and did 500 meters at his pace (2m45s), which was enough for me, thank you very much. We went down to the pool, just to stretch, and the water was so wonderful and warm that I swam 475 yards in fifteen minutes. Back in the locker room, the sauna was amazingly serene and welcoming; twenty minutes slipped by before I knew it.

I didn't set out to be a Ranger today.
It just sort of happened while I wasn't paying too much attention to anything.

Breathe.

Occasionally the Universe reminds me to slow down, breathe, let others be themselves, have patience and wait for what will be revealed. Yesterday was that, and, thankfully, I did much of what the Universe prefers.

Work stuff has been happening everywhere, up to and including a talk with my boss, the CEO, last Tuesday. I listened, even when it was uncomfortable, and approached the situation and myself with love and compassion. The next morning, I asked for mentoring on soft skills, and it was accepted. It's always uncomfortable for me to ask for help, and then I'm never quite sure how to receive it. Growth is always awkward; that's what makes it growth.

Then yesterday there were a ton of closed-door meetings, and the energy was Very Weird Indeed. But, true to form, it wasn't about me, despite my worries. It turns out that the head of my department, an executive director, has decided to radically change her position instead of coming back from maternity leave. I'm thinking this will be positive for her, and am really happy that she can find a work-life balance. As for what happens at work, we will be fine, of course. We will address it and in a year it won't seem to be nearly as big a deal.

We met with a friend last night after work, ostensibly to talk about some stuff for the group we participate with, but ultimately it was just really nice to have the time to share socially. Then we went home, did yoga in the living room and went to sleep. It was the best sleep I have had in months, and I swear that I feel more centered and real. This morning I spent 15 minutes in the sauna before showering and heading to the office. Life is really good.

My partner has another temp-job interview this morning, and I feel very centered and calm. Things seem to be moving forward on the house front, as well, and I'm expecting to have a walk-through this week with the contractor and inspections scheduled for next week.

Keep smiling, and remember to breathe.

~ o h m ~

I'm really looking forward to picking up yoga in the park again. With all the scheduling changes, it got dropped, but it's long overdue to add it back in, and Friday morning hasn't been the same since I stopped going. I know that it was because Vivian wasn't with me, but I'm looking forward to including her in the Monday evening offering. She has missed it and Bonny has missed having her in class.

I know I wouldn't be able to fit in the health and wellness pieces of my routine if I didn't have such great support from my partner. It really is all about balance.

Out on the town

Vivian and I were glad to be at Free Yoga For The People again; she missed Bonny. A little reading time before a movie later.

Welcome Back

This morning dawned on a return to the routine, and I couldn't ask for a better way to start my day, my week, or my month than with Bonny Branch and FreeYogaForThePeople in Elmwood Park. Then home for a repast of scrambled eggs, sharp white cheddar, sliced tomato, and basil picked from the garden before sitting down to work on the calendar for the Back-to-School issue.

Life is good.

Tinker Mountain

We hiked up Tinker Mountain as far as the overlook above Carvin's Cove this afternoon, 4.5 miles roundtrip, the first half of which was definitely nothing but "up."

Mountain pose at the mountain top,

and tree in the trees shows how good a time we were having.

And I call the one in front of the power line the Ohms Pose.

Even superheroes need a breather

Wow.
Super tired.
Sometimes I forget that all the meditation, regular fitness, add-on intense fitness sessions, and rigorous intellectual and creative work that I'm doing is still work, even though i really like it and believe in what I'm doing. After we picked up vegetables, eggs, and fruit for the week, we all hit the library and the shopped for a couple items at the co-op. Putting stuff away at home, i hit a wall with being tired - i just totally ran out of steam.

So I'm resting again before dinner.
And it's going to be an early night tonight.

Yesterday at the gym:
  • Walk -jog 1 mile
  • 32 back extensions
  • 32 inclined sit ups
  • 20@7.5#(l,r) each: swimmers press, skull crushers, fly
  • 1 minute plank
  • 30 minute sauna meditation
Today at the gym
  • Walk -jog 1 mile
  • 32 back extensions
  • 32 inclined sit ups
  • 1 minute plank
  • 20 minute sauna meditation
After the gym yesterday
  • met with my sponsor

After the gym this morning
  • tried to jump start Harvey's car
  • Met with the chaplain discuss independent study on spirituality, empowerment and communities
  • Went to yoga therapy
  • Rested until time to get the vegetables for the week.
Life is so very very good.

Yoga

Free yoga for the People in the morning at the park continues to leave me in awe of the power of the practice.
