Unpunishable

For reasons I don't understand, I am unpunishable.

When I was in the seventh grade, the same as Vivian is now, I was sent to a hyper religious fundamental private school. One afternoon after being forced to spend my recess cleaning the blackboard because I hadn't done my homework, I took the chalk and wrote The Declaration of Independence from Homework on the pristine board. The next day I was in the headmaster's office for my crime . He pulled out a paddle and told me to drop my jeans. I was appalled and said "you're an adult. And you're going to hit a child. With a board. For writing." "Yes" he replied. I complied and he hit me. I waited, silently, because Holy Mary that stung like sitting on a red anthill, something I had done back when I was six and wow. It took my breath away. Just as I figured he was waiting on me, he did it again. This time it didn't sting so much as it just *hurt*, and I was confused. While I was trying to figure out what the difference was, he did it again, and I wondered how long this would go on. I turned and looked at him, the sunlight slanting across his face and the paddle as he stood at the ready, behind me. "How long will this go on?" I asked. He sighed as if he were tired.

He was a quiet man, tall and thin and usually unseen in the halls of the small school. When he did make an appearance he often seemed uncomfortable at addressing the student body or parents, and usually had few words, quickly retreating off the stage. He looked like he wanted to do that now. "Until you cry," he said wearily. Oh. I took a deep sigh, and faced front again, squaring my bony hips up against the desk, spreading my fingers and planting my palms on the cold unfeeling surface. I looked out the window and said, not really to him, "this is going to take a while."

Happy Christmas to me

A bit of insomnia settled in, so I started watching the new episode of Leverage: Redemption. LeVar Burton as a small-town librarian during snow-filled holidays was good enough, but when Elliot cracked from truth serum and started spouting his chili recipe I nearly woke the neighbors by laughing. Pure gold. Christmas has come early.

Ghostly Weather

The weather is straight out of a Gothic novel, all dreary damp and cold, with days of rain forecast. The air is cold without the usual autumnal crisp -- it's enough to make a girl want to do nothing more than read or knit.

After finishing Brenda's scarf, I knocked about a bit, uncertain what to put on the needles next. The October Sky blue called to me, and now I have a small fireside throw in the making. It's a bit narrower than most afghans, designed to cover your lap as you sit in a favorite chair and listen to friends with tea or tuck in with popcorn and a movie.

Also, I was missing cables, so it's got oodles of them.

This weekend The Haunting of Bly Manor drops in Netflix, a modern interpretation of James's Turn of the Screw. Knitting and watching a proper English ghost story seems just right.

Silver Linings Notebook

As part of the Mind Matters series, we went to see Silver Linings Notebook at the Grandin Theatre. It was a first viewing for Harvey and a second viewing for me, and I confess that I loved it even more the second time around. This is a feel good movie about living the life that works for you instead of trying to have a life that doesn't, and how crazy-making it can be when we decide to change ourselves to fit someone else's view of who we should be instead of simply being who we are.

I love the Mind Matters series and I look forward to it every year. I wish it would go on through the school year instead of just for October, but it's definitely a perk of an already favorite month for me.

Nothing else for it

The cold damp weather seeped into the house quietly today, dropping the temperature to 64 before I noticed. My poor back did not respond well and has been seizing up all evening.
Unable to sleep, I broke down and took some prescriptions; I thought pain medicine and muscle relaxers would knock me out, but no. Instead, all I want to do is organize stuff, which would be spectacularly counterproductive.
I'm fuzzy-headed enough that I can't keep track of what row I'm on, so knitting and reading are out.
Nothing else for it but to watch some crime drama and see if I can snooze until dawn. Thank goodness for streaming video.
