Watch log: Hillbilly Elegy

I haven't read Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance, but its been on my list as a memoir model forever, so watching it came up to the top of my queue this Thanksgiving break. And it was worth every minute.

One of the brilliant aspects of this adaptation is that the characters aren't beautiful; they are rendered as believable on the screen in ways that are distinctly out of step with

Hollywood, a tactic that more shows need to adopt.

This memoir unfolds elegantly, with texture and nuance that builds on itself. Who we are, the story we tell ourselves about who we are and where we come from, and the story of how we got here resonate with impact in the present moments, with a highs pitched violin strain the runs taught my from the past and extends into the future beyond the frame. Nicely done.
