Frau Holle

In the Grimms' tale of the same name, Frau Holle brings the snow of the season when she shakes out her eiderdown and pillows. In Bohemia, it was said Holle carried a bunch of nettles to whip lazy spinners or those spinning on St Thomas' Night, 21st Dec.

The luck of the bramble hedge

In British folklore, brambles (blackberry vines) are associated with protection and boundary-setting. It was believed that passing under a bramble arch could ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.
