Though released this year, this science fiction film has a very old-school feel to it, and could easily have starred a young Kirk Douglas as the father on the run with his son who has special powers. Extra bonus points go to writer-director Jeff Nichols for not making the religious cult cliche or too easily dismissed -- in fact, he manages to make the group members more familiar than dismissible, and that’s a refreshing turn for recent cinema. All in all, this is a delightful movie, one that speaks to the heart. If you like Stranger Things and want more, this film should be next up on your watchlist.
